1. Make navigation easy. This rule tops the list because it can never be overstated. Websites which feature tedious paths to follow are not popular. A website doesn’t have to wow a visitor from the get-go, but it should allow visitors to see all it has to offer with minimal fuss. One tip is to keep links to a minimum on the home page. Drop-down menus offer the developer many options, as do duplicated links of site highlights. There is no point in hiding the jewels.

2. The layout is clear and clean. Getting the spacing right is no small feat, but it is one of the ingredients of any good affordable e-commerce website. Whether your pages are content-heavy or picture-heavy, let the material breathe, with plenty of white (or whatever background color) space for it to stand out. Remember also that different fonts can be problematic on certain computers, so plan accordingly.

3. Consider different screen resolutions. With websites with extended content (i.e., long articles which require lengthy pages), you will need to try and accommodate the different screen resolutions of visitors. To limit scrolling, find a layout which has the ability to stretch and present itself without issue.

4. Cut down on loading times. One common error in web design involves extended page load times. The goal is not to blow the mind of the visitor while taking 45 seconds to do so. Visitors think of what else they could be doing with their time, rather than why they should stay. Keeping graphics to the barest minimum will circumvent this problem. Unused scripts can also cause delays and send visitors packing.

5. Work on scale. Seeing into the future is impossible, but we can all be sure that computers and the internet itself will change. Think of the best possible way to scale your site and its design to accommodate changes that are sure to come in the future. A useful exercise is going back over the last few years and examining the progress of that time period.

For example, search using a picture of your favorite band and see search results that might include similar images, webpages about the band, and even sites that include the same picture.

How to search

There are a few ways to search by image:

Visit images.google.com, or any Images results page, and click the camera icon in the search box. Enter an image URL for an image hosted on the web or upload an image from your computer.

On any webpage, right-click an image and select the option to copy it. In most browsers, this option's name starts with "Copy image," except Internet Explorer for which you'll select "Properties" and then copy the URL that's then displayed.

HOW TO: Get Started With the COMPASS CSS Framework

Anybody who’s built a website of any size knows how quickly CSS can get out of hand. Style sheets can grow bloated and lengthy, making it difficult to find things, introducing redundancy and producing an end product that makes code maintenance tedious. Let’s face it — CSS is not very well-designed.

Over the years, a number of solutions have cropped up that attempt to deal with these problems. One of the most popular is the CSS framework, COMPASS.

Below, we’ll give you a quick introduction to how COMPASS works, and some tips on how to make it work for you.

What is COMPASS?

COMPASS is an open source CSS authoring framework written in Ruby that attempts to fix a lot of the shortcomings of CSS. It also streamlines development by providing a number of utilities and tools to make writing your CSS files easier and faster.

Those features include:

Support for variables and mixins.
SASS-style nesting of CSS rules.
Helper functions for images, fonts, colors and more, including mathematical calculations.
Flexible tools for ensuring cross-browser compatibility and graceful fallback states.
Integration of a Blueprint module, including several default styles for rapid prototyping and styling commonly used elements.

With all that and dozens more tidbits to offer, COMPASS provides a robust authoring environment for CSS creation that automatically monitors your code as you write it, compiling it down to pure CSS for use on your site. So while the COMPASS gem is needed for authoring, your website needs no special software or libraries to display CSS written in COMPASS.

How Does COMPASS Work?

Now that we’ve gone over what COMPASS is and discussed a few of its features, let’s take a look at some of them in action. In this, we’ll use a few variables and a custom mixin, as well as an image helper and nesting to show how COMPASS makes it easy to reuse content throughout your CSS files.

Here you see that we’ve set up a couple of variables (dark and light accent) which we use in the mixin, in addition to the CSS rules for our info box.

Next, the mixin itself contains the rules for our default fonts. After that comes an example of how nesting works. The rules for our input button, in this example, only apply to those found within the info box.

Finally, the image URL helper here is used to generate the output for the background image, so we don’t have to type the full image path each time (path information is defined in a small config file that sits in the root directory of your project).

Now let’s take a look at the COMPASS-compiled output:

As you can see, the mixins become included, variables substituted, image URLs generated, and inheritance is determined via the nesting. When generating the CSS, COMPASS also includes comments that clearly show us where each element is defined in its corresponding CSS file. If there’s an error at the time of generation, COMPASS will drop a helpful stack trace right into the CSS file where the error occurs.

At first glance, the original COMPASS code may look more verbose than the generated CSS output, but when you consider that those variables and mixins can be used throughout your entire project, you begin to see the advantages. COMPASS all but eliminates the need for adding presentational classes (e.g. “align-right” or “big-text”) without making you constantly repeat yourself. In addition, it’s feasible to completely change a color scheme for an entire project simply by updating a few variables and perhaps changing an image path or two.

This is only a small example of the power and flexibility COMPASS offers, but you can begin to see its amazing potential.

GIMP: GNU Image Manipulation Program is one of the powerful Open Source Image Editing Software. It is a freely distributed program for such tasks as photo retouching, image composition and image authoring. It has many capabilities. It can be used as a simple paint program, an expert quality photo retouching program, an online batch processing system, a mass production image renderer, an image format converter, etc.

GIMP is expandable and extensible. It is designed to be augmented with plug-ins and extensions to do just about anything. The advanced scripting interface allows everything from the simplest task to the most complex image manipulation procedures to be easily scripted.

GIMP is written and developed under X11 on UNIX platforms. But basically the same code also runs on MS Windows and Mac OS X.

Keyboard shortcuts can be a great time saver when working within GIMP. Rather than navigating through the menu structure to find what you are looking for, if you learn some of the common shortcuts it will increase your productivity greatly.

Design Your Own Android Apps Without Programming Skills

If you like the idea of creating your own App but don’t have any coding skills, you may be very interested to hear about Google’s new offering. The App Inventor (with the obligatory BETA in the title) is a new tool which allows non-programmers to build fully working applications for Android. Google announced the availability of the App Inventor on its blog earlier this week.

To use App Inventor, you do not need to be a developer. App Inventor requires NO programming knowledge. This is because instead of writing code, you visually design the way the app looks and use blocks to specify the app’s behavior.

Google has been working on the tool for over a year and it has been tested in schools and colleges. It works by using blocks for everything you can do with an Android phone, such as store information in a database, repeat actions and integrate with services such as Amazon and Twitter. The App Inventor also provides access to a GPS-location sensor, so you can build apps use your current location.

Everyday, we always encounter various colors – from the clothes we wear, the things around us, the food we eat, the things we use- everything. If our world doesn’t have this variation of colors, then everything will be so dull and boring. We cannot refute the fact that colors are part of our everyday lives.

Designers and artists of course make use of colors in their projects and are taking into account a lot of things before choosing which hue to use. Colors are said to activate the right brain for emotions. Emotions of a person can be seen depending on what color he/she uses. A project can easily reveal what it is trying to say merely by the choice of colors. Hence, it is very important to get acquainted with colors really well. Here are some things that designers need to know about colors.

1.THE COLOR WHEEL.

When you deal with colors, of course, you have to know the color wheel first. The color wheel serves as a reference for the different colors, the right color mixtures, the proper color harmony and many others. The color wheel shows the three primary colors red blue and yellow. When you combine these primaries, you’ll get the secondary colors orange, purple and green. Then if you combine the secondary colors to its neighboring primary color, you’ll get a tertiary color. There are six tertiary colors: yellow-orange, yellow-green, blue-green, blue-purple, red-purple and red-orange.

2.COLOR SCHEMES.

In working with colors, there are various color schemes that an artist or designer may use.

>>Achromatic uses black, white and gray.

>>Monochromatic uses a single color with various values and intensities. Black and white can be used here to add various tints and shades.

>>Analogous uses colors that are adjacent to the color wheel. Any three neighboring colors in the color wheel are called analogous. The colors vary slightly from each other and are harmonious.

>>Complementary uses colors located opposite each other on the color wheel like red and green, yellow and purple, orange and blue. Opposites really attract.

>>Triadic uses three colors from the color wheel which are equally spaced from each other. The primary colors when used together are considered triadic. Orange, green and violet are triadic colors.

3.EXPERIMENT

Don’t be afraid to experiment with colors. Try using various combinations and you might love the result of your designs. Just make sure that it looks pleasing to the eyes and it conveys the message you want to imply.

4.COLOR INTERACTION.

Consider how colors behave when they get together. There is a great tendency that it will look different when combined with another color. Colors may change in appearance depending on its surrounding.

5.READABILITY IN COMBINING COLORS.

When you combine colors with type, make sure that the text is still readable. Choose colors that could emphasize and enhance type. Look into the values and saturation of colors. When you use colors whose value is near each other, the text becomes less visible and readable.Try experimenting which color can be best used for your type characters and for your backgrounds.

6.BASIC COLOR THEORIES ON HARMONY.

In making your designs, you would always want it to look pleasing. So we have to consider color harmony. In doing that, we merely have to know three theories according to A Guide to Top Color Combinations in Web Design: Examples of Color Schemes and Color Combinations Within Designs .

Two Colors Opposite of Each other on the Color Wheel are harmonious.

Any three Colors Equally Spaced Around the Color Wheel Forming a Triangle are harmonious.

Any Four Colors Forming a Rectangle, Each Opposite of Each other on the Color

7.COLOR TEMPERATURE.

The color wheel also shows color temperature. Color temperature could either be warm or cool. Colors on the red side of the wheel are warm while those on the green side are cool. But color temperature is relative. Red can be warmer or cooler sometimes. The use of color temperature also helps us determine the position of an object. Warm colors are said to make objects appear nearer while cool colors makes an object look farther.

8.COLOR PSYCHOLOGY OR COLOR MEANING.

Most of the time, lighter and cooler colors are used for negative spaces but it still depends on the artists. **Chroma is the purity of a color (a high chroma has no added black, white or gray).

**Saturation refers to how strong or weak a color is (high saturation being strong).

**Value refers to how light or dark a color is (light having a high value).

**Tones are created by adding gray to a color, making it duller than the original.

**Shades are created by adding black to a color, making it darker than the original.

**Tints are created by adding white to a color, making it lighter than the original.

>>CMYK color is related to print work and describes how the colors Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, and Black are combined. It is a subtractive process unlike how we view color on a computer monitor. So when a designer works on your project and works with a 4 color process they are working with colors that can be represented by % of their individual CMYK components.

>>The RGB color space is capable of producing many more colors than the process (CMYK) color space. The most important thing to get out of this is that colors that are in the CMYK spectrum may not be accurately displayed on a monitor, meaning you may see a difference in the colors between your monitor and what is printed. Before you get a job printed you should always view a realist proof from your printer.

>>Pantone PMS Colors or Spot colors are solid colors that you can specify – mostly used on logos or added to 4 color jobs to bring out a vibrant or color that cannot be produced with a CMYK process. Most logos are designed using 2 colors, the problem is that if you go to print the logo in a 4 color process the color will shift and may not match. If you are printing you brochures or catalogs in 4 colors and you want your logo to match your 2 color business cards you might be in for a surprise.

Yahoo Pipes: The coolest things on web

Yahoo Pipes is an interactive tool that enables you to combine many data feeds, like RSS, into a single aggregate. Pipes offers an intuitive visual programming field that lets you filter, remix, and mash-up these feeds to your heart’s content.

You can create Pipes for many purposes. Probably the most common is combining all your favorite news feeds, but that’s just the beginning. One user created a feed that sends him all the apartment listings near parks or schools. Another built a Pipe that sends him all eBay listings within a certain price range.

Oddly, Yahoo launched this wonderful service – which was so popular it crashed the servers its first day – without posting a user’s guide. (Pipes is the product of the programmer-geeks, not the business types.) They say the tutorial is on the way.

In the mean time, here’s the quick guide to building your own Pipe. Note: this guide keeps it simple, but don’t be limited. Once you’ve built a basic Pipe, you can mix and remix until you’ve created the ultimate mash-up. Let’s get started.

Choose Your Sources
1) Go to Yahoo Pipes and click on MyPipes. Since you haven’t made one yet, clicking on MyPipes takes you to an editing page to create your first one.

2) The “Editing Pipe” page gives you an intuitive visual interface. This is a where you’ll specify all the feeds you want to use, and combine and filter them as you wish. On the left-side menu bar, under “Sources,” is a box called “Fetch.” Drag this box onto the editing field. You’ll see an URL box:

3) Enter the URL of the RSS feed you want. (You can find the URL of a site’s RSS feed by clicking on the RSS icon in the URL box at any Web site with a feed.) I get my tech news from Internetnews, so I added its RSS feed first. You can also find feeds using the “Search for Pipes and Feeds” box in the upper right corner. Notice that when you add a feed, the Debugger in the lower right corner is updated.

4) Once you have your first RSS entered, you’ll want to add a few more (most likely several more). The point of Yahoo Pipes is to combine many information sources into one. So pull another Fetch box on to the editing field to add more URLs of RSS feeds. You can also add more URLs by clicking the “+” sign next to URL in the Fetch box.

5) Drag a Union box onto the editing field. (You’ll find the Union box under the "Operators" category on the left-side tools menu.) Connect the outputs of both your Fetch boxes to the inputs of the Union box by clicking and dragging your mouse from point to point.

Filtering Your Pipe

At this point our Pipe has four feeds, all with a hefty array of daily headlines. That’s a lot of information to wade through every day. So let’s filter our Pipe to limit the data flow down to a manageable level.

6) To do this, drag a Filter box onto the editing field. (You’ll find the Filter box under the Operators category on the left-side menu bar.) Connect the output of the Union box to the input of the Filter box. Connect the output of the Filter box with the input of the Pipe Output. (Notice that the choices in the “title” drop-down menu on the Filter box update when you make this connection.)

The Filter box allows you to filter your content in a zillion different ways – click on the “title” and “contains” boxes to see the many possibilities. Let’s say, for the sake of simplicity, you’re not interested in reading articles about outsourcing or wireless. The example in the picture shows how to block any feeds that concern these topics.

Save Your Pipe

7) Now, click on Save near the top of the editing field, and name your Pipe. On the MyPipes page, you can click Publish to make your Pipe public.

Click on Run this Pipe to see the aggregated feed you’ve created. (Will you really be able to consume this much information? If not, go back and filter out more content.)

Having connected your feeds together into an aggregate, filtered them as you see fit, and hit Save, you’ve built your first Pipe. Congratulations!

Install: LAMP web server and Drupal 7 in Ubuntu

Installing a web server is very easy in Ubuntu (I use ubuntu10.10), just enter a few lines in the terminal: There is no need to install and configure each part of a LAMP (Linux-Apache-MySQL-PHP) installation individually. You can also install other programs this way. The downside is that all components are installed automatically, and not reviewed by you. But as long as you only use the web server locally (localhost or 127.0.0.1), and don't open up for access from the Internet, it should be safe.

Installing LAMP web Server

To install a LAMP web server, enter this command in a terminal and enter your password:

sudo tasksel install lamp-server

After a while the installation process will prompt you for a password for the MySQL server. Make sure that the CAPS Lock button is not activated! If all goes well, the installation will return to the terminal, and the web server is installed. Test this by going to your browser and enter http://localhost/ in the address bar. If the installation was successful, you will see an "It works!" message.

Update php.ini - allow big files, avoid memory issues

To allow importing large sql dumps through phpmyadmin, and avoiding time outs during demanding requests, it is also necessary to update the php.ini file of the Apache server. To open up the php.ini in gedit, enter this in your terminal:

gksudo gedit /etc/php5/apache2/php.ini

...and update the values five places, where it says:

max_execution_time = 120

max_input_time = 90

memory_limit = 96M

post_max_size = 150M

upload_max_filesize = 150M

session.gc_maxlifetime = 14400

Fix Apache Error "Could not reliably determine the server’s fully qualified domain name, using 127.0.1.1 for ServerName"

Open the httpd.conf file:

sudo gedit /etc/apache2/httpd.conf

The httpd.conf file is blank, so add the following to the file, and then save it:

ServerName localhost

Create a MySQL database

To create a database in the MySQL database, log in to the MySQL shell:

mysql -u root -p

Create a database, for a Drupal installation in this example, type in the MySQL shell:

CREATE DATABASE drupal7;

and leave the shell:

quit

If you typed in the password(in this example, "ROOT") accidentally with caps lock on, this is how you change it to something safer. "root" is NOT recommended as password. From the terminal:

mysqladmin -u root -p'ROOT' password 'yournewpassword'

Install phpmyadmin

You can also create and administer your MySQL databases through phpmyadmin:

sudo apt-get install phpmyadmin

Administer your databases at http://localhost/phpmyadmin/

Install and enable mod_rewrite

Install mod_rewrite, to get nice URL's:

sudo a2enmod rewrite

Enable mod_rewrite:

gksudo gedit /etc/apache2/sites-available/default

...and change "AllowOverride None" to "AllowOverride All", around line 11:

Options Indexes FollowSymLinks MultiViews
AllowOverride All

Restart the Apache web server:

sudo /etc/init.d/apache2 restart

Installing Drupal 7
1. Start nautilus up with this command:

gksudo nautilus

...and navigate to the /var folder, right-click on the www folder, click 'Permissions' and set owner and group to your own user name. This will prevent problems with automatically created folders in the future.

2. Download and extract Drupal 7 from http://drupal.org/. Rename the folder to drupal7 and move it to /var/www/ where the web sites of the Apache web server reside. Result: /var/www/drupal7

3. Create the files folder, like this: /var/www/drupal7/sites/default/files. Right-click the 'files' folder, select 'Properties' -> 'Permissions' and under 'Others', set 'Folder Access' to 'Create and delete files'

4. Make a copy of the default.settings.php file in /var/www/drupal7/sites/default and rename it to settings.php. Right-click settings.php, select 'Properties' -> 'Permissions' and under 'Others', set 'Folder Access' to 'Create and delete files'

NOTE: Add an exception in Firefox, if you have disabled "Accept cookies from sites" and unblock the new site if you have a script blocker activated in your browser.

If all went well, you should now be able to enter http://localhost/drupal7 and install Drupal.

Setting up a virtual host

To set up a virtual host, allowing you to enter just http://drupal7/ in stead of http://localhost/drupal7/:

sudo gedit /etc/hosts

...and add:

127.0.0.1 drupal7

To define where the Apache web server should be looking for the files:

gksudo gedit /etc/apache2/httpd.conf

...and add:

DocumentRoot /var/www/drupal7
ServerName drupal7

As always, when you change the set up of the Apache server, restart it:

sudo /etc/init.d/apache2 restart

Move apache webroot from /var/www to your /home directory and move MySQL folder

For back up reasons and to have a more "normal" work flow when adding files to your web site, you can move the apache webroot from /var/www to /home/USERNAME/.www -- the .www folder will be hidden until you press Ctrl+H to unhide it:

gksudo gedit /etc/apache2/sites-available/default

Change DocumentRoot /var/www to DocumentRoot /home/USERNAME/.www

If you have set up a virtual host:

gksudo gedit /etc/apache2/httpd.conf

...and change to: DocumentRoot /home/USERNAME/.www

Keyword research, one of the most essential facts of good search engine optimization can also be one of the easiest tasks to do wrong. Here are five ways you can improve the effectiveness of your keyword research. Then, I'll show you Drupal's "easy button" for better keyword research.

1. Analyze your content for keyword ideas

One of the primary objectives for the search engines is to serve the most relevant content for a particular users query. Search engines determine what web content is about through a variety of factors (this is what we spend time optimizing in SEO), some of these factors include your meta page titles, keyword usage within your page copy, and backlinks to your website. So it would make sense that you would want to begin your keyword research by first figuring out what keywords and concepts are already prevalent on your webpage.

You can do this in two ways. You could go through your content by hand, and pick out what you believe to be the most relevant or most used keywords on the page. Or, you can put it in the hands of web software that can make this analysis for you. In Drupal, both the Alchemy module and Scribe SEO module can help you with this analysis. Alternatively, you can try the Scribe SEO module demo, and input your own content to analyze.

Once you find your keyword ideas, plug them into a keyword research tool like Wordtracker to get more related keywords.

2. Start broad

When you're first starting keyword research, you always want to begin with broad (root) keywords, then work your way to long tail variations. For example, if your website is an e-commerce retailer for custom bicycle seats, you may want to start your keyword research with phrases like "bike", "bicycle", or "bike seats".

3. Use long tail modifiers

As you do your keyword research, you'll start to see variations of your primary (root) keyword pop up. For example, your search for the phrase "bicycle" might return results for "used bicycle for sale" or "buy bicycles online". "Used", "for sale", "buy", and "online" would all be considered modifier keywords, and the entire phrase (used bicycle for sale) is what we would consider a long tail keyword. A long tail keyword by itself provides less traffic then your root keywords (bicycle), but in aggregate, there are many more relevant long tail searches then there are for your root keywords. Long tail keywords tend to bring more qualified traffic, convert at higher rates, and are less competitive.

4. Look at your competitors for inspiration

Use your competitors as a guide for your keyword research efforts. Look at their meta page title tags, headers, and page copy to see what they may be trying to optimize for. Sometimes this can even lead to inspiration for a new niche market to go after.

5. Look for uncompetitive niches

One of the biggest mistakes people make in keyword research is assuming it's about finding the words with the most possible searches. Really, good keyword research is about finding those keywords that not only get a large volume of searches, but are also uncompetitive, and deliver qualified traffic. I frequently tell clients that I'd rather they get 500 qualified visitors per month who convert, then 5,000 who don't.

6. Localize your keywords where possible

One of the easiest ways to long tail your target keywords is to add local modifiers to them. For example, instead of optimizing just for the phrase "website design company", we can add the "Dallas" to the phrase, making "website design company dallas", and be optimized for local searches as well.

CSS and Joomla

What is CSS?

If you know HTML and CSS, you have a huge advantage when trying to customize your website. Most extensions are fine the way they look when you install them. However, if you want the look of your website to be consistent, you often need to do some CSS tweaking. So if you don't know any CSS, you'd better start learning now. This post is not about learning you the specific techniques of CSS. Rather it is written to give you an overview on how CSS is used in Joomla.

This is what Wikipedia has to say about Cascading Style Sheets:

"Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) is a style sheet language used to describe the presentation semantics (that is, the look and formatting) of a document written in a markup language. Its most common application is to style web pages written in HTML and XHTML, but the language can be applied to any kind of XML document, including SVG and XUL.

CSS is designed primarily to enable the separation of document content (written in HTML or a similar markup language) from document presentation, including elements such as the layout, colors, and fonts.

The bold part of this excerpt from Wikipedia is the most important thing to know about CSS, in my opinion: Separation of content (HTML) and visual presentation (CSS). By using CSS, we can use one, centrally located file with all the styles. Keeping the styling separate from our Joomla articles. That way, site-wide style changes are easy to do. Just imagine if you did article specific styling in each and every article on your site. It would be a nightmare to do style changes - in the case of a redesign or template change.

Joomla CSS and templates

I'm always amused when I read a tweet saying something like: 'Joomla doesn't support IE!'. Or: 'Joomla is not search engine optimized'. Of course it is! But the template might not be. It all comes down to how the template HTML is built and how the CSS (Cascading Style Sheet) codes are implemented.

Most of the time, the template CSS files are found in the /templates/TEMPLATENAME/css/ folder.

Some templates use only one CSS file (called template.css, mostly), others have several. For optimal page performance, you should keep the number of CSS files to a minimum. This reduces the number of server requests necessary to show the page. You may sometimes see that the template uses a main CSS file which imports all of the other files by the following syntax (example):

@import url('reset.css');

@import url('joomla.css');

@import url('typography.css');

@import url('modules.css');

@import url('custom.css');

CSS Best Practices

Let's say you have installed a template from YooTheme. You could go bananas and change all of the CSS files wildly. Probably won't be a terrible thing to do either, as you can download the original files again if you screw something up.

However, there is a better way. When you want to override CSS in a template, use a separate stylesheet. YooTheme has actually implemented this structure in their templates already. They have included a blank CSS file called custom.css which is loaded after all other CSS files. This is where I keep all of my style changes.

If I want to upgrade my template, I can just copy this custom.css file, upgrade my template to the latest version and upload the custom.css file again. All set!

Don't repeat styles if you don't need to

When styling elements with CSS it's important to be specific. And to keep your stylesheet lean. What I mean is you don't need to repeat styling just because you want to restyle an element. Let's say, for instance, that you have the following style for the H1 tag in your main CSS file (template.css or similar):

h1 {

font-size:24px;

color:#d7d7d7;

margin-bottom:1em;

text-transform:uppercase;

}

The normal styling for H tags are bold. Maybe you want to add the styling to make the header tag use the normal and not the bold style of the font. And, at the same time you don't want to have uppercase letters in the H1. Of course, you could do it like this, adding the following code to your custom.css:

h1 {

font-size:24px;

color:#d7d7d7;

margin-bottom:1em;

text-transform:none;

font-weight:normal;

}

This works, but it's not good code. You repeat all of the styling even though you just want to alter one style and add another. This is a better way:

h1 {

text-transform:none;

font-weight:normal;

}

In this case, you only add the styles that are different from the original. The other styles are left untouched.

Use Firebug to Test Your CSS

One of the tools I use to test my CSS is called Firebug. It's an add-on to Firefox which gives you a lot of information about the CSS and HTML structure of a web page. When you have Firebug installed, you can right-click on an element and choose 'Inspect element'. The Firebug window will open at the bottom of the screen. Now, you can see the HTML structure (left) and the CSS (right).

Now the fun begins! You can start experimenting with the CSS directly in Firebug. Want to change the margin of an element? The background color? Remove the border? Every tweak you would like is available to play with, and the result is instantly shown in the browser. Of course, if you refresh the page the changes are lost. When you're happy with your changes, copy the CSS into your custom CSS file and upload to your server.

Take some time to learn CSS

I believe every Joomla user / web site developer should learn some CSS and know HTML by heart. It makes it so much easier to modify your templates and to achieve what you (and your client?) wants.

It's not like learning PHP. I hardly know more than a handful things about PHP. HTML and CSS, however, are like second nature to me. That's because I've invested time into learning and practicing the use of these skills. This is especially true for CSS.

Easy to get started with CSS and Joomla

The easiest way of starting to learn CSS is to look at your existing template.css. Look at the structure of it and try changing some of the styles. Do a backup of the file first.

You could try and change the header tags first. Want the H2 tag to be smaller? You got it :) And now it's a site-wide change, valid for all instances of the H2 tag. Other tags to change are the a (link) tag, the p (for instance adjusting the line spacing) and the UL and LI tags (bullet list).

Designing logos is just like any other type of design work, to be professional you’ll need to pay attention to details. Even a great idea can be ruined by not thinking about simple things, the following tips will help you to keep your concepts safe.

1.Work with vectors
This probably sounds obvious to most designers out there, but it isn’t to everybody so I repeat it as often as I can to avoid receiving those damn jpeg logos. Vector formats are the ones that will allow the most variations for your logo.
2.Don’t use more than 2 fonts
There is many nice fonts out there and we would all love to use as many as we can. Unfortunately using too many fonts will most of the time result in a loss of coherence. Using two different fonts can be good to create a contrast, catching the eye.
3.Keep it readable
If people can’t read your logo, it’s useless to have one. This sounds like dumb advice again, but it’s easy to get caught in creating letters or distorting a font until it becomes unreadable. Always stay aware of that when working on your logo.
4.Test sizes
Your logo should resize well at any size, whether it’s huge on a truck or tiny on a badge.
5.Adapt it for dark backgrounds
So you’ve got a wonderful looking dark logo, but now your client want to get it on his black car. It’s usually not too hard to adapt it, but you’ll look more professional if you already got that case figured out.
6.Make sure it works well in black and white
I have a very simple technique for that: I work every logo in black and white before adding any colour. This way choices are made judging by the shapes and you are not distracted by anything else. It makes it much easier to know that your logo will work well in shades of grey afterwards.
7.Don’t include photos in your logo
Well… this one goes along with the first tip. First, photos are not vectors. Photos also don’t scale, have no branding value and are hard to adapt for any use.
8.Look at it upside-down
This is a tip I got from my teachers in graphic design school, looking at your logo (or any printed design really) will get the meaning out of the way and give you a new look at the design’s balance and white spaces. Try it!
9.Don’t follow trends
It’s often hard to escape trends, especially if you’re passionated and love to look at inspiring logos on design sites. Your logo has to work on the long run, so try to avoid the web 1.0 swoosh or the web 2.0 reflection.
10.Get specific feedback
Asking people’s opinion is worthless if you don’t know what informations you want to get, so when getting feedback, try asking specific questions (eg. does your logo expresses the industry of the company?).

Remove Anything You Don't Really Need

OK, while this might sound obvious sometimes the hardest thing about creating a website is not using every fancy trick that you know. Images, flash and sometimes even sound files are very impressive.. but do you really need to showcase all your talents on one page?

Embedded sound files are something many people just find annoying anyway. You'd be surprised how many are surfing at work ;-). The last thing anyone wants is a loud music or sounds announcing to their boss that they're surfing. Also many people have their own music playing... hearing a song over top of what we're listening to is less than pleasant. As for Java applets, try to ditch them or if you want those effects, JavaScript unusually loads faster and can do just as much or more. Stand back and take a critical look at your website, you may see a few special effects that can be let go of for the sake of faster load time.

Avoid Nested Tables

OK, I'm not a big fan of using tables for layout anyway (I'm one of those people that believes content and presentation should be separate.. but thats another tip page). With that said, if in your templates tables seem necessary (or the easier way to do it), try to avoid nesting. Why? When you place a table inside another table, it takes a lot longer for the browser to work out the spacing since it has to wait to read the entire html and then work out the layout. If at all possible, try using CSS to create the columns on your page.

Avoid Full Page Tables for Faster Rendering

If you use tables, try avoiding the whole page being one big table. The browser won't show anything until it's read the whole thing that way. For a faster loading webpage, either try multiple tables (not nested) or having stuff above the main table to make your content in the first table show up faster. That way your visitors will have something to read while the rest of your page loads. It may not really make you page faster, but it will feel like it to your visitors.

Split Up Long Pages - Multiple Short Pages Load Faster

By splitting up long pages into multiple pages you not only make the content show up faster but many people that see a very long scroll bar give up. Remember, people's attention spans are often shorter than a grasshoppers (OK, not literally, but you get my point) since so much information is available at our fingertips. Try breaking it up into more readable lengths.

Remove Excess "Whitespace"

Whitespace is the spaces between your coding, removing the unneeded tabs and spaces can help a lot! Doing this will take a lot of extra bytes off the total size of your page and will speed up load time quite a bit. (Careful using automatic squishers, I find they often squish too much and makes it rather hard to edit later.)

Keep Your Code Clean

If you do use a wysiwyg editor, most times the will add useless code to your pages for example, many will leave empty tags (ie. ). Removing any of those excess tags will not only speed up your load time, but make you pages validate a lot cleaner.

Speed up Images Load Time

Don't Go Overboard On Images

While images can greatly enhance the look of a site they can really slow it down if there are too many. Try to decide if all your images are really needed (quite a few nice effects can be done with css, so sometimes images are unneeded.)

Height And Width Tags

When the page loads and the image size is already defined (ie. you've used the height and width tags), the browser knows where everything will be before the images are loaded. Otherwise the page has to wait and load the images before the text. Same goes for tables, so try to use width tags when possible on those as well for a speedier page.

Faster Images? Reduce Their File Size

There are many totally free, online image optimizers so you don't even have to install anything and it's extremely easy! Online Image Optimizer will greatly reduce the file size of your gif, jpg, or pngs and neither you or your visitors will be able to see the difference other than a page that loads a heck of a lot faster. They also keep the transparency and animations in gifs! For another JPEG reduction, try JPEG Wizard, also free, this one will only work with pictures in your hard drive not ones from the net. You can also choose some simple effects to be done (flip, mirror and rotate).

Personally on new sites I design I tend to go for optimized pngs. They have lossless compression (unlike jpgs and can be used without worry (gifs have the potential to have copyright issues) and load fast! With all that said, if you still want to use gifs and jpgs, here's a bit of fast info... If you don't need sharp resolution, choose GIFs over JPEGs, as GIFs generally load quicker. JPGs are generally best for photos, GIFs for anything else.

(I'd add a rant here about how Microsoft had held up the web's development with not making IE6 support png transparency... but *sigh* I've ranted about this already to anyone who will listen. Firefox, Opera and other modern browsers however have been able to show alpha transparency in png for years... oops, sorry, that was a mini rant after all!)

Here are 10 reasons why you should seriously be considering Drupal for your SEO-based Web development projects.

1.Advanced URL Control — Unlike WordPress, Drupal gives you precise control over URL structure. Each item of content in Drupal (called a node) can be given a custom URL (called a URL alias). In WordPress you are generally limited to one type of permalink URL for all posts. You can override the "post slug", but it's much less precise than Drupal's URL aliases. You can also automate custom URL structures for each different content type with the Pathauto Module. The Global Redirect Module will automatically 301 redirect the internal Drupal URL to the custom URL alias. Unlike many other content management systems, Drupal's content pages have nice clean URLs.

2.Custom Content Types and Views — You can use the Content Construction Kit (CCK) and Views Modules to create new content types and create advanced custom views for them without writing any code. You can create as many custom content types as you would like and display them in many different ways. For example, you could have blog contents that allowed free tagging (similar to WordPress categories), while your news section might have a different vocabulary (set of categories) that could only be selected from an existing list of categories. Drupal's advanced taxonomy features, combined with CCK and Views, allows you to easily target all of those long-tail keywords that you researched in Wordtracker.

5.User Management — Drupal was designed for community-based Web sites and has strong user role and access control functionality. Very often we receive questions about how to promote new website and get more visitors. While it’s easy enough creating new website from zero, everything becomes much more complicated when it comes to website promotion, online advertising and traffic. There is no wonder, because website promotion requires lots of skills and experience, and not all webmasters know how to start.

This guide was written to help you attracting more visitors and increasing website traffic. It should be useful for newbies and advanced users, because this guide covers most aspects of successful site marketing and most of methods are explained step by step. However, if you believe some methods are above your technical skills, don’t worry. Just skip these methods and continue to other. So enough chit chat, let’s get started!

#1 – Search Engines Traffic.
Natural (or organic) traffic is type of traffic coming from all major search engines. If any visitor searches for some kind of information and finds your site in results, you get organic traffic! Unfortunately, it can be really hard (depending on your niche) to get website listed in the top of search engines. So one of things you may want to do – submit your URL to all major search engines manually. Usually just visit any search engine (where you want URL to be submitted) and type something like “submit URL” into search box. Engine will surely return a page where you may submit your URL for indexing. If your sites contains sitemap file (like sitemap.html or sitemap.xml), be sure to submit sitemap file as well - it will speed up whole indexing process.

#2 – Links Exchange.
External links never hurt. The more websites will link to you, the more traffic you will get. It’s that simple! Swapping links is easy enough. All you need to do – find related websites and contact their webmasters asking to exchange text links with you. Ask webmaster to add your link to his site, and do the same for him. However, try exchanging text links with high quality sites only. Having links on junk site (which has low number of visitors) will not help much. It’s better to have one link from big website instead of having 10 links from tiny sites, remember it when looking for links exchange partners. If you want to know what is the easiest way finding links exchange partners, do this - visit www.dmoz.org, select category related to your website, and then simply email webmasters of sites you like. Another way to find link partners is searching on Google.com for your top keywords. For example if you are willing to rank for "blue widgets", go to google.com and do a search for this keyword. You will get a list of top websites now try to contact owners of these websites and request link exchange.

#3 – Link Directories.
There are thousands of link directories on the Internet. Some of them are free, and others are paid. This time we will focus on free directories only. Having links on directories not only helps increasing search engine rankings, but also help getting more visitors who come from directories to your site directly. The biggest free directory on the Internet is dmoz.org, but it accepts only very high quality websites. If you believe your site is really high quality, try submitting it to dmoz.org. Also you can find other directories easily. Just go to Google (or another favorite search engine) and type “free link directories”, "link directory", "backlinks directory", "links exchange directory" or something similar into search box. You will find hundreds of link directories waiting for your submission!

#4 – Social Networks.
Social bookmarking networks works in similar way like link directories, but there are some differences too. The main difference from link directories is popularity. Social networks get millions of visits per day, so you may get more traffic too. However, to become successful in social networking, your site must contain high quality content. When you submit your URL to social site, other visitors can rate it. If rating is high, your URL is moved into main page where more people can see it. Adding links to social networking sites also will help getting better rankings in search engines. This work is pretty hard, so you may submit URLs manually or use any automated social bookmarks submitter software – it’s up to you. #5 – Forum Traffic.
There are thousands of webmaster forums around, and most of them have special sections where members can reveal their websites for reviews and criticism. However, be sure to read forum rules before making any post (especially if you are a new member to forum). Different forums have different rules, and if your message will not comply to these rules, your account will be banned and message deleted. It’s better to spend minute reading basic rules, instead of posting message with your URL and getting everything deleted shortly. If you want to find forums where you may submit website for review, use “webmaster forum”, “site showcase”, “show your site forum”, “site reviews forum” and similar terms in search engines – you will surely find hundreds of forums waiting for you.

#6 – Signatures.
Many message boards, blogs and other websites allow visitors using signatures. If links in signatures are allowed (once again, read forum rules first), add one or more links (most sites allow adding up to 3 links in signatures) in your own signature. Once you will post a message, signature with backlinks to your site will be automatically inserted below message. Nice and easy way to build traffic, isn’t it?

Well, there are many more ways building traffic and attracting more and more visitors every day, but these tips should be really good start point for most new webmasters. Joomla is great for building all sorts of websites, but Websitesupport find that the real power comes from being able to mix and match PHP/MySQL code with the rest of the Joomla code.

There are numerous ways to do this:

If you want to do it the right way then you can always write a custom module or component. A module is not that difficult, but a component is a bit of a different story. I am not going to go into how to write a component here, since the focus of this entry is rather on doing a quick and dirty!

I've seen this Extension on the Joomla site:
It is a Developer Toolkit for Joomla that, among other things, "creates boiler plate components" - will check it out one of these days and write up some feedback.
You can use the Static Files component. I used this quite extensively on some of my sites, and it works quite well.

You can download it from http://www.joomlaxt.com/ and the author has now written up a quick guide that should help you get going with it. You can find it on joomlaxt.com.

Update : 26 Jan 2008: I do not use this at all any more, but rather KL_PHP, as described below.
But here is the clincher! The BEST way to do 'quick-and-dirty' PHP programming inside Joomla is to use this mambot: KL_PHP. This mambot is not publically available any more but you can download here KL_PHP Mambot.
Also, you cannot use this bot directly in modules, for that you require the module: mod_kl_evalphp.zip
Now, I do realise that there are other options available by now, as also commented on below, however, this has worked very well for me up to now so I am not really interested at this stage to try something else!
Here are my tips to get the most out of it:

Firstly, don't even try and use it if you have your WYSIWYG editor on. The WYSIWYG editor will destroy some of your code and you can never be sure that the code that you entered so painstakingly will still be there after you've saved it. So be sure to turn your WYSIWYG OFF when you use it in any page.
Then make sure that the Mambot is actually published!

You can then create a 'Static Page'. Make the name and title both 'some page' and link it to a menu item called 'Some Page'. I normally use the Othermenu or Usermenu to publish these types of pages for testing purposes. Your 'Some Page' page with your kl_php mambot will then look like this:

Here are a couple of power tips:

You can use multiple { kl_php } ... { /kl_php } combinations through your page, but if you want to refer to $inv_num, as in the example above, later on in your page inside a different { kl_php } ... {/kl_php} block, you have to declare it as global first in the other blocks else it it won't have the value you originally assigned to it, it will be seen as a new variable.
Apart from that, you can also include other PHP files inside your { kl_php }... { /kl_php} block. This is very powerful since if you don't want to be bothered with writing your PHP code inside your Joomla content, you can write it as external PHP files and just include the PHP files. For maintenance purposes this might be better since if anything happens to your Joomla installation your PHP code will be gone too!
PLEASE NOTE: FOR SECURITY PURPOSES ALWAYS INCLUDE A CHECK AT THE TOP OF YOUR FILE TO MAKE SURE THAT THE INCLUDED FILE IS CALLED FROM THE JOOMLA ENVIRONMENT. For example, make sure that you include the following line at the top of your included PHP code:

defined( '_VALID_MOS' ) or die( 'Restricted access' );
You can print output directly to the front end by using 'echo' and 'print' - at least in all the cases that I've used it. In some of the older forum entries it is specified that you should use 'Return' to output any values to the front end, however, I have not found that to be the case any more.
In my most recent usage of this mambot, I have even found that it is possible to sessions. It is therefore possible to code quite complex applications directly into your Joomla content by passing parameters through forms as well as sessions.

The fact,Joomla is one of the easiest ways to quickly design and create your own website. You can easily create a wonderful looking website with loads of functionality. Wordpress is another way to create and manage your own website - but more on Wordpress somewhere else.

Joomla started life as an Open source Content Management System called Mambo. In August 2005 a split took place between the core developers of Mambo and the owners of the Mambo name. The developers decided to continue the development of this software under the name Joomla and most of the community that previously supported Mambo have now thrown in their weight behind the new product.

You can install Joomla from the Fantastico Panel inside the cpanel that comes with all the hosting companies. You need to have PHP and a MySQL database available, but these are also included with ALL the hosting companies, so it really is easy to get it up and running on your site.

In this demo you will see the front end of Joomla ( in other words, an example of a website that you can build with Joomla).

You can also log into the administrator section, where you would go to add new content (in other words, text, pictures, file downloads etc) to your site. Select the administrator option and use the username and password provided on the site to play around with the back end of the site.

Joomla comes with a lot of built-in functionality but there are also thousands of free components and modules that you can add on to expand the functionality.

The other nice thing about Joomla is that there are lots of forums that offer free support and guidance. The problem normally with freeware is that support is provided not through any licensing fees that you pay, but through a community that all contribute and therefore gain themselves in the long term. Joomla has a very active community, and it is therefore very easy to get support for any possible problem.

How to set up URL channels

You may have more than one sites displaying AdSense Ads for Content. You may want to see which site is performing better. To track this, you will have to set up URL channels. Then all the clicks and earnings coming from that site will be shown in the report. To set up URL channels, do the following steps:

1. Sign into your AdSense Account
2. Click the AdSense Setup
3. There will be 3 choices, AdSense for Content, AdSense for Search and Referrals. Click AdSense for Content.
4. Under the AdSense Setup tab, click "Channel"
5. Click "URL channels"
6. Click "Add new URL channels"
7. In the box, enter the URL's of the sites you want to track, one URL per line8. Then click "Add channels" and you are done.

After that, you don't need to do anything, even when generating the scripts for your ads. You don't need to select the URL channel. You only have to select channels if you are using Custom channels

How to make the Google AdSense searchbar and change the width, etc.

To generate the script for your Google AdSense searchbox, sign into your AdSense account and click the AdSense tab, then select AdSense for Search. You will have a choice of just a Websearch or a Websearch+Sitesearch. Click the appropriate radio button. If you chose Websearch+Sitesearch, you will then have to type in the URL of the site, and this will appear next to the radio button in the search bar itself. If you have a long URL, the width of your searchbar will be wide. See for example the sample below:

Note that the radio button for a Websearch is ticked by default. If you want your readers to search only the content of your site, you will have to tick the radio button for the sitesearch (beside the URL). I have seen searchbox with the sitesearch described as a short This site, but have not found the means to do it. I believe that is only available for premium AdSense account.The default Google AdSense search bar is often still too quite wide for the position where you want to place it in your site, but it can be changed. There are various ways to make it narrower. One is to tick "Logo above text box". See the screenshot below (click to enlarge):

To make the searchbox even narrower, tick the radio button beside "Search button below text box" (if the URL is too long, this may not work). Depending on other factors (especially if it is only a Websearch bar), changing the length of the text box to a smaller number of character can further make the searchbar narrower. See for example the sample below:

You can also change the background by using the drop-down menu, but the choice are only black, white and gray. You may have seen searchbar with other background color, but again, that is only for premium account holder.Note: sushithmn of TIPS TO MAKE MONEY BLOGGGING has this to add:On the setup wizard for AdSense for search you will see an option called {"Google search" on button} select it, then check the drop down menu for the background colors and you will see an option to "use HTML code" for background color at the end of the drop-down menu. I have tried this, and looks like if you want to have more choices of color for the background, you cannot have the Google logo on your searchbar as ticking the radio button on the "Google search on button" option will cause the Google logo to disappear from the searchbar (Note: I can understand why it is necessary for the Google logo to be missing from the searchbar as using other colors for the searchbar for the background may make the logo very ugly or even have some part of it blending into the background). You will now have more color choices including choosing HTML code for the color. If you want to use HTML code for blending the background color of the searchbar to the site, The post will describe how to use a tool to help you choose the HTML color to blend with the site.There are other choices. You can choose to have Site-flavored search that lets you customize your search results to be relevant for your site. The search result page opens in the same window by default, but you can choose to make it open in a new window. You can even the choose to have the results of a user search appear within a frame on your own page. Those who have strong opinions about getting results for adult audiences, or have children frequently your site, you can also opt for a safe search, which will exclude contents sensitive to young children. I believe a message saying the author has selected safesearch is also added to the searchbar, and this may increase the likelihood of people who are sensitive about such matters.After you have made your choice, you will be taken to a page where you can customize the logo and style of your search results pages to match your site, choose a country or territory to determine which Google domain will be used for search results, choose SafeSearch so that sites and web pages containing adult themed and explicit sexual content are excluded from web search results and specify a custom channel to track the performance of this search box. Clicking CONTINUE will take you to a page with a box containing the script for the search bar. Just click inside the box, and the whole script will be highlighted. Right-click and select copy (or ctrl+A) and paste into the template of your site.

Note: The one thing you CANNOT do is to alter the script yourself to get what you want. It can get your account suspended.

his section’s Beginner’s guide to Google Adsense will concentrate on CTR (Click Through Rate). I wish we can all place Adsense on our website and wait for the dough to roll in but things are not that easy. There is a system to making money with Google Adsense.

The Adsense should be placed in a very visible area on your webpage. The area will have to be chosen carefully to maximize exposure. We are trying to increase the rate at which visitors to your website click on your website. Increasing the CTR of your visitors by 1% is enough to be happy about. Don’t believe me?

Say a thousand users went to your website and 2% clicked on the Adsense. That is 20 clicks. If the CTR is increased to 3%, then that results in 30 clicks. A difference of 10 clicks. In time these clicks add up and you will have left some major money lying on the table.

You may have great ideas of where to place the Adsense but remember that you must not impact the browsing experience of your visitors. The Adsense should be left in the same location for a week or 2. During this period, carefully monitor the performance which is the CTR.

When to Apply for Google Adsense account?

The beginner’s guide to Google Adsense cannot be complete without mentioning the steps to open an Adsense account. What a lot of people do not understand is that the website has to be up and running before Google will approve of your Adsense account.

Application of a Google Adsense account is not the first step for my beginner’s guide to Google Adsense. Creating the website or installing a blog depending on how you want to place the Adsense is the first step

Once the website is created, make sure that it is search engine optimized (SEO) and that good content is written and uploaded. The content should mention relevant keywords and have the correct “keyword density”. This means that a keyword should appear on 3% of the article

For example, if your content is 100 words then the keyword should be mentioned 3 times. Once the content is ready, you can apply for a Adsense account at http://www.google.com/adsense

Applying for an Adsense account is not immediate. You need to wait for a few days before being approved. One of the things they will ask you for is your website URL. So make sure your website is ready before applying for an Adsense account.

1.If you don’t want too much competition from other SEO’s, choose your keywords precisely. For example, Instead of keyowrd Loan choose keywords like Bank Loan, Equity Loan, Student Loan, Home Loan etc. Order of keyword also matter for search engines. Search engine treats “Loan Equity” and “Equity Loan” as different keywords.

2.Best seo practice is to get at least one of your primary keywords in domain or sub domain name of your website.You can use hyphens (-) to separate multiple keywords.For example: seo-service, seo-guidelines, free-seo each cover two keyords.

3.Get your second or third keywords in your directory name and filename. For example http://www.hiddentricks.com/seo/free-tips.html is best for keyword “free seo tips” , “seo hidden tricks” or "free seo tricks"

4.Keep your webpage free from any syntax error, declare document type at the beginning and validate your HTML and CSS because search engine don’t like pages with too many errors.

5.Give a short Title in of your page in 3-9 words (60-80 characters) maximum in length containing your primary keyword.Remember it will be displayed in search results so choose wisely.

11.If you are using images then use “alt” attribute to describe your image with proper keyword.

12.Keep size of your webpages less than 50KB so it is downloaded fast and visitors don’t have to wait for long. For good SEO site page size ideal should be 15KB.
